Air Jordan 16

The Air Jordan 16 was released on February 17, 2001 - Jordan’s 38th birthday. This shoe was the first to not be designed by Tinker Hatfield in over a decade, yet it brought together the best pieces of shoes Tinker designed. The Air Jordan xvi hit the shelves following the successful (though ugly) Air Jordan 15. Jordan Brand found that Jordan didn’t need to wear the shoes in the NBA to be on the hot list of every other American teenager.

Ok, well, Hatfield didn’t exactly retire (he was actually promoted), but this was the first shoe since the Air Jordan 2 to not be designed by Tinker Hatfield. The Air Jordan 16 were designed by Nike’s Senior Footwear Designer Wilson Smith. Smith decided to bring in a few design elements/fabrics from earlier releases. For instance we saw the return of the clear rubber sole (Air Jordan 5, Air Jordan 6, Air Jordan 11) and they also featured patent leather (Air Jordan 11).

Air Jordan 16 Retro OG Black Varsity Red

Air Jordan 16 Retro OG Black Varsity Red

The Air Jordan 16 (XVI) Original (OG) - Black / Varsity Red (3/4 High Men) was released on February 17, 2001, and retailed for $160. They were the original colorway of the Air Jordan 16 (XVI), and are set to be retroed in 2008 as part of the Air Jordan 7 (VII) / Air Jordan 16 (XVI) Countdown Package. They feature an all black leather upper with a patent leather toe, as well as red accents, and a clear outsole. The only thing wrong with the Air Jordan 16 (XVI) is that they do not have great traction, as there is not enough rubber on the bottom. This specific colorway features a black leather shroud which hides the lacing system, and gives the shoe a more casual look, which is an added bonus. Features of the shoe include a hidden quick lace system, carbon fibre sheath, patent leather, Zoom Air insoles, and a Jordan shroud, which is a covering for the laces, made from full grain leather.

Air Jordan 16 Retro OG White Midnight Navy

Air Jordan 16 Retro OG White Midnight Navy

The Air Jordan 16 (XVI) Original (OG) - White / Metallic Navy (3/4 High Men) were released on March 24, 2001, and retailed for $160. They feature a white leather upper with an extremely noticeable blue patent leather toe. The Jordan shroud features a white leather design as well as a navy mesh on the back. The shorud is basically a lace covering, which hides the laces, and actually seems to give the shoe a nicer, more casual look, which means you can wear them for different occasions. The Air Jordan 16 (XVI) combines aspects from previous Air Jordans. For example, you can see the patent leather located on the toe from the Air Jordan 11 (XI), the ribbed leather gaiter similar to the uppers of the Air Jordan 14 (XIV). Also, the 3/4 midcut from the Air Jordan 3 (III) (hence the name 3/4 High), and the mesh uppers from the Air Jordan 5 (V). The shoe also features a clear strip vertically down the heel counter, as well as a clear outsole. The sole seems to be a problem among critics, as...
